“Forget what side of the aisle I’m sitting on, I’ll sit criss-cross applesauce on the House Floor if I have to”: Anchorage Teacher Announces Independent Run for U.S. Congress, Seeking to Defend Alaskans’ Rights, Protect the Environment, and Bring an End to America’s “De Facto Two-Party State System”

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Matthew “Bronco” Williams, an Anchorage-based private school teacher, writer, and journalist, has announced his independent candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives election this year, seeking to represent Alaska’s at-large Congressional District. He filed his intentions to run with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Thursday and declared his candidacy to the Alaska Division of Elections that same day.

Williams, 28, was born in Germantown, Tennessee, near Memphis, and was raised in nearby Hernando, Mississippi. He currently lives near Anchorage, Alaska, where he runs and hikes frequently, photographs wildlife, and is active, along with his wife, in his local Church congregation. He also teaches math, science, and social studies to middle and high school students at a private Christian school there.

Williams is a teacher with several years of teaching experience in public schools, private schools, and homeschool settings. Currently a math, science, and social studies teacher, he has previously worked as a music, physical education, Spanish, and theatre teacher during the course of his career in education. He studied theatre at Northwest Mississippi Community College, creative writing and journalism at Arkansas State University, and education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Williams, described in his campaign biography as being “Independent of any party affiliation, except for brief periods during previous campaigns”, was a Democratic Candidate in 2024 for the U.S. House of Representatives elections in Mississippi, and the Democratic Nominee in his district for the Mississippi House of Representatives elections in 2019. In both elections, he ran in his first year of eligibility, aged 26 and 21, respectively. Now running this year as an Independent, he wrote in an FAQ response on the same page that “Neither side is good. The Democrats and Republicans claim that they’re different from each other, that they’re two opposing forces that disagree and can’t stand each other, but it’s all an act. They’re at each other’s throats in the media, hurling insults back and forth and bickering with one another over hot buzz-word topics when the cameras are rolling, but in the long run, we can see this feud is strictly performative. Their animosities and their beef completely disappear when it comes to keeping the status quo maintained and protecting our current class structure. So forget both sides of the aisle, I’m making my own section. Forget what side of the aisle I’m sitting on, I’ll sit criss-cross applesauce on the House Floor if I have to.”

His Platform, which deals with, among other things, Helping to Heal Our Economy, Providing Quality Education to Our Students, Adopting a Diplomatic Foreign Policy, Protecting the Environment, and Protecting Our Rights and Our Democracy, can be found in full on the campaign website.

A video about Bronco Williams and his campaign, released on YouTube and posted to his campaign website, can be found below. He explains a few of his motivations for running, saying, “Folks, I’ve gotta keep it real with you. The amount of representation we have in our government these days is not enough. Our ‘representation’ (if you could even call it that) has shifted to protect the interests of the wealthy, the elite, and those in power, and they’ve stopped protecting us. I’m running because what we have doesn’t work anymore. I’m running because we need Something Different.”
